When you're planning your visit to Sri Lanka, timing and location are key. Our beautiful island has two main monsoon seasons that affect where the best weather is at different times of the year. But the good news is — there's always a perfect place to visit no matter the month!
This is one of the most popular times to visit Sri Lanka. The weather is sunny and dry in the southern and western regions — ideal for beach lovers. It's the perfect season to explore Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota, Colombo, and head up to Ella and Kandy for some cooler mountain air. If you're into wildlife, this is also a great time for a safari at Yala National Park.
While the south experiences rain during this time, the East Coast shines bright with clear skies and calm seas. Head over to Arugam Bay for surfing, or relax on the peaceful beaches of Trincomalee, Nilaveli, and Pasikuda. This is the best season for water sports, snorkeling, and soaking up the tropical sun away from the crowds.
This is considered a “shoulder season” with more rainfall around the island, but it can be a wonderful time for cultural tours. Crowds are fewer, and the scenery is lush and green. Visit ancient cities like Anuradhapura, Dambulla, and Sigiriya, or enjoy the cool highlands around Nuwara Eliya. Perfect for indoor sightseeing and spiritual experiences.
Sri Lanka is warm all year round, especially in coastal areas where temperatures range between 25°C to 32°C. The central hill country is cooler, especially in Ella, Nuwara Eliya, and Kandy, where you can expect temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. It can feel humid, especially near the coast, so light and breathable clothing is always best.
